Enjoying one of the most beautiful scenic ride through the hills of Serbia while boarding the Šargan Eight is a “must”!
Šargan Eight is a narrow – gauge heritage railway located in the gorgeous Mokra Gora between 3 Serbian mountains Tara, Zlatibor and Sargan.
Originally, the railway was a major traffic route linking Belgrade with Sarajevo and Dubrovnik but nowadays it is one of the most attractive tourist destinations taking the visitors on a very picturesque ride through tunnels and over bridges.
The tracks of train has an unusual shape of number “eight” that is why it is called Šargan Eight! The 300 m altitude is bridged by only 3.5 km longitude. The “eight” section contains 20 tunnels and 10 bridges that form a third of the total length of the railway.
Šargan Eight is unique and its ride is considered to be the best train rides in Europe.
The train climbs up to 1544m altitude and the total length of the railway is 15km.
Šargan Eight was restored so that “Life is a miracle” (2004) the movie directed by the famous Serbian film director Emir Kusturica (who built the wooden town of Mecavnik https://majatraveling.wordpress.com/2017/01/19/life-is-a-miracle-in-mecavnik/ ) could be filmed.
